ELEMENTS

CITY / HISTORY / INTERIORITY

Self-Portrait in Mirror 1946 / Henry Koerner

The VIENNA PROJECT at Harvard University is a multi-dimensional scholarly and artistic endeavor that synthesizes biography with theoretic and historical explorations into the interiority of psyche and city. Through lectures and visual media, the project re-imagines fin-de-siècle Vienna through the lens of the Vienna Interior, Freud's Dream of the Burning Child, and the Family Portrait.  Inspired by the life and art work of Henry Koerner (1915-1991), a Viennese painter who fled his home town at the wake of the Anschluss in 1938, these elements all point to the hidden core of this project: the uncanniness of home.
